I went through this quick meeting with an agile class recently and I said I would post this for the crew to refer back to. In agile teams there are a couple of core roles and then the rest depends on the kind of work the team does. But we can give some more clarity than this, as I have previously discussed here. Even so, the role of the Scrum Master or Product Owner or Tech Lead or even others will vary from project to project and even sprint to sprint. So I often have people sit down together and actually tell each other what they think they are in the team for. I then compare this to what the person doing the role thought they were doing. It leads to fun discussions and the revelation of surprising differences in opinion. In bigger teams I even do this as a speed dating exercise. Each person develops their rough role profile and then sits with another team member. They have three minutes for one of the team to describe their role and have the other question them or comment on things.

Let a team learn more about each other when it comes to personal history. This will build trust within the team. Lack of trust is the first dysfunction which you need to overcome in order to deal with the other four dysfunctions. The idea is that if people start to reveal innocent details from their childhood, other people start to realize that they are real human beings, not just work robots. A perfect spot would be by the coffee machine or round a lunch table.
Preferably together with some Swedish fika. Create a quiz with the answers to some of these questions. Hand the quiz out. Give the team the assignment to rotate and try to fill out the answers to the quiz by interviewing each other. Arrange a speed-dating session with the purpose of learning as much as possible about each other. Propose the questions as topics for conversation. Perhaps do a quiz after the session for fun.

In July, Agile reported from SciPy in Austin, Texas, one of several annual conferences for people writing scientific software in the Python programming language. The conference was quite a bit smaller than its US parent, but still offered 2 days of tutorials, 2 days of tech talks, and a day of sprints. It all took place in the impressive William Gates Building, just west of the beautiful late Medieval city centre, and just east of Schlumberger’s cool-looking research centre.

This is partly because selecting a supplier is a bit like choosing a marriage partner without the benefit of dating. Consider, for a moment, the traditional contracting process. Clients issue an RFP. Multiple suppliers submit written proposals that, in some cases, exceed 1, pages, often cut and pasted from previous proposals, without really knowing the client’s unique business needs. The client inserts detailed service descriptions, performance indicators, penalties and other tools designed to keep the supplier on time and under budget.
At the end of the RFP process, both the contracting company and the supplier are often locked into a multi-year relationship. And if the supplier overpromises and underdelivers, the laborious contracting process begins all over again.

Encouraged by the positive feedback of the participants, the schedule and the Coaches Clinic was changed a little between the first and second conference. In his session Boris brought a lot of ideas with which you can do a lot for the sustainability of your company and your fellow men in a very simple way.
An introductory example was the 17 sustainability goals of the United Nations. His approach is that if everyone tried to work towards these goals on their own, the world would be a better place every day. All in all a very exciting approach that gave every listener the chance to set 17 possible and above all sustainable goals with his company and in his private life. As a psychologist, Joseph Pelrine has always been fascinated by the application of agile methods and ways of thinking in his daily work.
Due to his current support and advice to medical personnel in fighting Covid Link to the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center , he gave the audience very exciting insights into the agility of psychological work and the fact that treatment methods have to adapt quickly to the circumstances. Not only did he conduct ad hoc surveys among the participants, creating a very interactive session, but he also added the appropriate medical and psychological symptoms and current quotes on how to deal with and overcome these obstacles.
One of the points was distance and alienation through virtual measures, which had to be faced.
7 Big Ideas from Business Agility 2018
Running an effective sprint retrospective is hard. The good news is that your sprint retrospective will get better with experience. Every time that you convene for a meeting you will be able to identify areas where the meeting could have been improved, where feedback could have been better solicited and implemented, and how small adjustments to the techniques used in the meeting could have big results on the next one.
Gain a deeper understanding of how your team truly felt about the previous sprint and design solutions that answer their biggest concerns, resulting in a smoother collaboration during the next sprint. It could have still been a productive and helpful meeting, but there is nothing wrong with recognizing that there is room for improvement.
It’s been a while since I shared yet another crazy retrospective format that we tried. Here’s a new one, the “speed dating retrospective”. This format makes it mandatory for everyone to actively participate and gives everyone the same importance. Which is particularly interesting when you have “loud-mouths” in your team. I would encourage you not to go over 5 permutations in order to keep this phase under 60 minutes.
If your team has more than 6 members, leave some permutations off. Remember to create a permutation plan beforehand, it will help swapping the pairs faster and will prevent deadlocks. The 10 minutes slots are themselves divided in roughly 2 x 5 min slots during which you discuss each others topics in turns. After 10 minutes, one or two minutes might be required to write down information and consolidate the discussion before starting with the next round.
The low hanging fruits can be picked right away. The rest should be prioritized and the top ones picked as “todos” for the next sprint. I’ve used this retrospective format twice this week with great success.
